Marine Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood,19, died Oct. 14, 2010, by a small-arms fire while on deployment in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Catherwood, of Byron, Illinois, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, California. He enjoyed sports, four-wheeling, and shooting. He earned many personal service awards, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and many more. Catherwood is survived by his fianceé, Hailey Patrick; parents, Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood; sister, Mikaela and her husband; and numerous grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
